Biomethane & Upgrading

Designed around the resource.
Scoped around the objective.

Upgrading aims to enrich the methane in biogas and produce gas suited to its intended use. Membrane separation is assessed together with gas flow, composition and product requirements.

The route to biomethane

Upgrading system concept showing membrane modules, gas preparation and compression equipment.

THE PROCESS

How does the system work?

01

Pretreatment

Removal of H₂S, moisture and feedstock-related trace contaminants.

02

Pressurisation

Compression, temperature control and gas preparation for the membranes.

03

Membrane separation

Gas enrichment through differences in the selective permeability of CO₂ and CH₄.

04

Product gas control

Monitoring gas composition and utilisation requirements; managing product and residual gas streams.

SYSTEM SCOPE

Engineering components
considered together.

Equipment and process options are selected according to project inputs and target outputs.

Gas preparation

Filtration, drying and pretreatment to meet the membrane manufacturer’s inlet gas requirements.

Membrane module

Number of stages and recirculation configuration selected alongside methane recovery and energy consumption.

Compressor package

Compression, cooling and condensate management according to flow and separation conditions.

Analysis & integration

Monitoring CH₄, CO₂, O₂, H₂S and moisture according to project requirements.

THE STARTING POINT FOR DESIGN

What data does your project need?

Key information for initial assessment and proposal scoping
Inlet gasMinimum–maximum flow and CH₄/CO₂ composition
ContaminantsH₂S, moisture, O₂/N₂ and trace components
Product objectivePurity, methane recovery and delivery pressure
Point of useOn-site use, compressed gas or grid supply objective

Pressure, product purity and recovery are defined by the selected membrane and process design.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Key points before making a decision.

Can biomethane be supplied directly to the grid?

Grid connection requires assessment of gas quality, metering, pressure and connection acceptance procedures. An upgrading unit alone does not guarantee grid acceptance.

Can the CO₂ stream be used in a greenhouse or for microalgae?

This is a potential integration route. Purity, H₂S and other trace components are analysed to determine further treatment and utilisation requirements.
