06 / MICROALGAE CULTIVATION

A biological approach to
carbon and nutrient streams.

Microalgae solutions that bring culture selection, cultivation, harvesting and resource integration into a single project.

Microalgae Systems

Designed around the resource.
Scoped around the objective.

Microalgae cultivation requires coordinated control of species, water quality, light, temperature and nutrient balance. System design starts with the target biomass and its intended use.

THE PROCESS

How does the system work?

01

Species & objective

Selecting a culture suited to the intended biomass use and cultivation conditions.

02

Cultivation

Controlling light, temperature and nutrients in a photobioreactor or suitable open system.

03

Harvesting & concentration

Separation and dewatering suited to species and product requirements.

04

Product & recirculation

Preparing biomass for its target use and recovering suitable water and nutrient streams.

SYSTEM SCOPE

Engineering components
considered together.

Equipment and process options are selected according to project inputs and target outputs.

Cultivation system

Closed photobioreactor or suitable open cultivation approach, depending on species and scale.

CO₂ & nutrient preparation

Quality control of gas and liquid streams; dosing and feeding suited to the culture.

Monitoring & control

Monitoring pH, temperature, light conditions and culture development.

Harvesting line

Filtration, centrifugation or another suitable concentration method according to biomass characteristics.

THE STARTING POINT FOR DESIGN

What data does your project need?

Key information for initial assessment and proposal scoping
Target productSpecies, biomass characteristics and intended use
Water & nutrientsWater quality, nitrogen/phosphorus source and inhibitors
CO₂ sourceComposition, purity, flow rate and gas preparation requirements
Site & scaleLight, climate, space and pilot trial results

Commercial scale is determined through culture trials, harvesting assessment and product evaluation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Key points before making a decision.

Can digestate supply nutrients for microalgae?

After suitable pretreatment, dilution and analysis, it may be considered for some cultures. Ammonia, salinity, light transmission and contamination risks are assessed in pilot trials.

Can the biomass be used as food or feed?

Suitability is not automatic. Species, feed source, purity, product safety and the requirements of the intended use are decisive.
